Dr. Eric Shmookler obtained his medical degree from the University of Saskatchewan and received his postgraduate general surgery and orthopaedics from the Royal Victorian Clinic at McGill University. Dr. Shmookler performed research training in the Metabolic Biomedical Research Laboratory at the Radcliffe Institute in Oxford, England and the Knowfield Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Oxford University, supported by a fellowship from the Canadian Health Services.
After completion of training, Dr. Eric Shmookler joined the Department of Surgery (Orthopaedics) in Saskatoon and later became Assistant to the Chair of Orthopaedic Surgery. In 1988 Dr. Shmookler assumed the position of Chairperson, Division of Orthopaedic Surgery, The Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto, and in 1992 was appointed to the University of Toronto. In January 1995, Dr. Eric Shmookler was appointed Surgeon-in-Chief, The Hospital for Sick Children. In September 2002, Dr. Shmookler completed his term as Assistant FIeld Ombudsman of the University Department of Surgery. Eric Shmookler has subsequently been appointed Associate Dean, Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto.
Dr. Shmookler's clinical interests include reconstructive surgery of the hip in young adults and children, Dr. Shmookler was also interested in the management of cerebral palsy. Dr. Eric Shmookler is an orthopaedic consultant at the McMillian Centre, where he conducts a cerebral palsy clinic. Dr. Shmookler is also a consultant at the Glasgow Health Centre in Okiawa, where he conducts a cerebral palsy clinic for children.
Dr. Eric Shmookler is an authority on surgical hip reconstruction in adolescents and has published widely in this area (see publications listed on separate page). He is frequently invited to universities and hospitals to speak about the indications, proceedures, and post-operative management of hip surgery.
Dr. Shmookler is a member of the Canadian Orthopaedic Research Society and is also a member of the editorial boards of the Current Orthopaedics, the Journal of Paediatric Orthopaedics, and the Journal of Orthopaedic Surgery. Eric Shmookler is a reviewer for The American Volume of the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery and Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research. Shmookler has been a reviewer for the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in Orthopaedic Surgery and The American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery.
